Wow wow wowzzers.
Empire of Storms is the Fifth book in the Throne of Glass series and began right where we left Aelin in Queen of Shadows. We follow Aelin as she, yet again, comes up with grand ideas and surprises everyone with decisions made steps ahead of everyone else. Forgive me for taking so long with this book, I took a break for a while from the series. But with the new book coming out soon, I cant delay it any longer.
Just a fair warning. The gigantic battle happened in the previous book. Therefore this one is all about building up forces, making plans, fighting their way across the continent in a race against time. There is also a lot of relationships being built and pairings coming together. So love, friendships, anything relationship wise is going to happen here. Bonds are forged between characters and debts are created and called upon.
Oh No’s
Of course, the biggest Oh No was the lack of action. That sea-wyvern battle was still one of the greatest fight scenes I have ever read, but there is still a lot more to happen in this series. In all honesty, this book is not very helpful toward the overall plot of the series. The ending was also greatly battle filled but the majority of it was boring travel and small displays of magic.
Multiple viewpoints. If you hate a constant change of character, viewpoint, and place in time, then this is not the book for you. The chapters are almost always a different character but I loved the tension build up that this device plot adds. The ‘almost getting to the answer’ then to be thrown halfway across the continent to another situation just kept happening.
Please read The Assassin’s Blade before reading this book. I had not and there are a lot of references to things that happened in that book so I am kind of upset. I now have to go back and read that book then come back to the scenes in Empire of Storms to fully enjoy the story.
Yay’s
All of your favorite characters over that last four books finally meet. And it is everything you wanted it to be. Manon and Aelin get to know each other more and how their future is even more entwined than they previously thought. I always loved Manon’s side of the story and how she is a bigger part. Same with with Elide. You will be happy to know that this book practically begins with her straight out of the previous book.
Relationships are everywhere. All of the pairings and couples that are created in this novel were so cute to read. This book was quite fluffy with the romance and really played with everyone’s heartstrings. SJM really wanted every person to have an equal of some sort to lean on during this war.
Lysandra! My girl has grown so much from last book I felt that I grew with her as she discovered her true fighting power and shape shifting abilities. That Sea-wyvern battle is one I will remember forever. Her overall courage and undying loyalty to Aelin is so profound, I can honestly say I love her.
Now that I have finished this amazing book, I must wait a bit to buy the next. Hopefully I will finish it by the time Kingdom of Ash comes out (and Barnes and Noble has sale). The final end to the series is approaching and I don’t know how to handle this. I have never loved a series as much as I love this one.
Favorite Quote:
Lysandra made him change out of his dirty travel clothes, barged into Aelin and Rowan’s room wearing no more than her own bedsheet, and took whatever she wanted for the Fae Prince’s armoire.
Aelin’s barked Get out! was likely heard from across the bay, and Lysandra was smirking with feline wickedness as she returned, chucking the green jacket and pants at him.
