Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Wow I haven’t read this good of a book in a while. This is actually very reminiscent of Throne of Glass and I really loved this book. To begin, Elias is a mask. One the most ruthless killers known to man. But, he doesn’t want this life anymore. Laia has lived a simple life until its turned upside down when a mask kills her entire family. She now has to fight for her life.
Warning: This is the first book in a SERIES. The end will not be satisfactory. There are two more books (so far).
Oh No’s
Marcus is a dick. Just a genuine asshole and also the perfect villain. I GUESS. He was written very well but just know that he one big trigger warning constantly throughout this novel. I’m really excited to see if his character changes at all in the second book.
This book actually took a long time to read. I’m not sure if I was just reading each word to make sure I didn’t miss anything important. I feel that every word mattered to this story and because of that it took a longer time than usual to read.
The fact that all the characters have to do is follow exactly what the augers say is a little annoying. It takes out the mystery to the novels. The how is intriguing but you will always know the why is because of a future that the augers foretold. It is just a little weird to me and I’m hoping more is explained later on in the series.
Yay’s
This world building. Wow. The info is snuck in so well. There are no giant info dumps and it was so nice to not be bombarded by words and huge text filled pages. We were able to simply just jump into the plot. This was such a great read.
The characters individuality was great. Between the jealousy and a love triangle FINALLY of the opposite sex! I don’t think I’ve read one of these in so long or at least one that is so well written.
Finally,
This was an awesome book. So much happened in this book that I love that there are two more to go to read. I bought this book in a “An Ember in the Ashes” book combo box. It came with the first and second novel as well as two tote bags (one pictured here). The other is a spoiler from the new Owlcrate box and it is a pillowcase with a quote from this novel as well. Just to let you guys know: I will not be reading it next because I need it as motivation.

“You are an ember in the ashes, Elias Veturius. You will spark and burn, ravage and destroy. You cannot change it. You cannot stop it.”

I don’t like unlikable characters, but they are necessary to a book.

Wow, you’re so young, I’m so much older than you, but you make me feel young. All young people do. And, you’re a prolific reader, too! You’ve set some lofty goals for 2019, and I hope you reach them! To feel so deeply towards a character means that the author must have done a good job of penning the book and you have rewarded them with your emotional response(s) towards the characters. Much of my time nowadays is spent going to doctor’s appointments (mine and my wife’s) and a small amount of time is spent reading. Too small, I’m afraid. But, I have to earn my living by getting dividends so that takes precedence, I’m afraid. But, through people like yourself I can live (and *read) vicariously, and I am deeply thankful to you for that. Keep it up!

Thank you so much! I’m happy I can help. I know how it is to be super busy and not have any time to read (the last few years) but now I have that time and Im gonna make sure to take advantage of it. Enjoy!
