This is a great coming of age story about a black teen trying to find his place in the world. Remy Cameron does it all. He is president of the Gay-Straight Alliance at school, taking AP classes, and keeping quite the social butterfly. But, when his teacher assigns him an essay about “who he is,” Remy is thrown for a loop he just can’t quite figure out.

Oh No’s

There were wayyyy too many people introduced and talked about. Especially right in the beginning. A giant friend group each with respective partners, teachers, and then on to extended family members? I could not keep track of everyone and their mother.

One thing I do not condone is normalizing having sex with someone before establishing a relationship. When you want to be with someone, you should really make sure they’re the one. This will make it more enjoyable minute added worries and mixed feelings. The small wait is worth it in the long run. It’s also better to get to know a persons likes and dislikes beforehand.

Yay’s

Loved the slow burn romance and issues that not only teens experience but as a black gay teen in a majorly white high school. This is a narrative that needs to be told and I love that this is an Own Voices novel.

Finally,

As I said, this is a great coming of age novel. Especially for those who are just diccoveryling their sexuality. You don’t always need to define something and not everything needs a label. Life throws you for twists and turns but you will hold on for the ride.

My similar recommendation for this novel would be Running with Lions by Julian Winters.
