This was the one book I wanted to grab when I was at Bookcon. I beelined to the booth that was giving out tickets in the morning. We were told to come back at one and we showed up at around 12:30 to get in line. Pictured above is getting our books right before getting them signed by Joan He herself.
This story centers around Hesina, newly crowned queen, after the unfortunate death of her father. But, Hesina will not let her father go without a proper trial to find the true killer of her father. We will follow Hesina and her group of friends as they try to discover what is really going on.
Oh No’s
I hated Akira. His character was not there. I felt he was just a man bun dude with a rod who was really good at everything he did. I also didn’t like how he started to become a romantic interested toward the end when he still felt like a total stranger. In essence, we never learn anything about his character but are expected to let him grow on us.
The surprise twist at the end was not good in my opinion. It was just unexpected and unnecessary. The twist was actually very similar to the one found in The Gilded Wolves.
Yay’s
The story was full of twists and turns. I honestly loves how much the plot changed throughout the novel. Stemming for the simple action of starting a trial for her father, we learn so much more about Hesina and her court. We learn as she does and as she discovers deep dark secrets about her family and life.
I absolutely loved Hesina even though I keep reading her name as Hesinia. Her strength throughout the passing of her father and fighting for the truth was quite compelling. She was definitely a great main character to follow.
Finally,
This was quite an adventure but I feel like the twist at the end kind of ruined it for me. I do suggest everyone give this book a chance but it was not the book I thought it was.
My similar recommendation for this novel would be Flame in the Mist by Renée Ahdieh.
