Top reads for 2019

Hello everyone!

Taking a short break to clear the mind! So, in the mean time: These are my top reads for the year! Five out of five stars required and I enjoyed them all!

With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevado

I haven’t loved a book like this in so long. Emoni Santiago is a strong half-black, half-Puerto Rican single mother who is doing everything she can for herself and her Babygirl. This includes caring for her Babygirl, helping her ’Buela(grandmother), working part-time, oh, and finishing high school. Emoni has her hands full but she is not going to let that get in the way of her dreams of being able to cook what she loves.

Crown of Feathers by Nicki Pau Preto

Where to even begin. Well, obviously, this book is about phoenixes and their riders. A long time ago there used to be those called Phoenix Riders. After the war, those riders with the power to speak with animals were forced to become bond-servants. But there are others who were forced to hide. This book has three main characters. Each with their own stories and problems.

Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson

Elisabeth Scrivener, an apprentice in training at the Great Library of Summershall. But this is no ordinary library, it contains ancient, magical books known as grimoires and it is Elisabeth’s job as an apprentice to tend, care, and protect them. That is, until things turn upside down in ways Elisabeth never imagined. Now she is being taken to the capital for questioning and has all but lost her previous life. But, things are not what they seem. It will be up to Elisabeth to truly see what is happening before it’s too late.

A River of Royal Blood

Evalina is the next princess in line for the crown. But so is her sister. Thanks to a law set forth by the first queen, Eva must fight her sister to the death to claim the crown. The only problem is Eva doesn’t know how to use her magic as she is the only one in the kingdom with this magic. Eva must find a way to unlock her power and save herself from being killed at the hands of her own sister.

Shadow & Bone Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo

This series follows Alina Starkov, an orphan currently working in the army. When she finds out she has powers, her life is turned upside down. She is taken to the Grisha school where other with powers similar to hers go. But no one is as special as she is. But not everything is what it seems.

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

Mia Corvere knows darkness, she knows it quite well. When she is finally told by her master that she must go on to train with the, Mia will go on a journey she will never expect. This wonderful novel shows the life of killers in training and how they learn their craft.

Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J. Maas

WARNING: This is the 7th and last book of the series. I really recommend reading the first seven books but if you have no plans to do so, then by all means venture forth.

Where to even begin. I mean, the story has at least 15 different character views within just the first 10 chapters. And there is war raging in all four corners of the world (but only one continent on the map).

Furyborn by Claire Legrand

We follow two girls each with their own storyline. First is Rielle Dardenne, who we learn might be the prophisezed Queen but no one can know this. She has had to keep her powers a secret her entire life but when the one she loves is threatened, everything changes in an instant. A thousand year later, we are introduced to Eliana Ferracora. She is an assassin hired to get of rebels to the empire. She soon meets a stranger who makes a deal with her to travel to distant lands. Where will this lead her?
