[Book Review] A Darker Shade of Magic

Title: A Darker Shade of Magic
Author: V. E. Schwab
Pages: 400
Genre: Fantasy, Action & Adventure
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

This book follows the main character Kell and his ability to travel through three dimensions in which he names different colors. He is one of only two people with this remarkable ability and he currently lives in one of these remarkable worlds. The one with magic. Of course, things take a turn when Kell breaks the rules and takes an item between worlds. Now it’s up to Kell to fix his mistake before things are too late.

Oh No’s

I really dislike Leila’s character. I really felt that she was quite basic. To me, she didn’t really add anything to the story except to have just been a side piece of some sort. I also don’t really like how the book ended with her. Since this book does have a sequel to it (even though it doesn’t really need it) I guess I will continue and find out more about Leila’s character in the future.

Yay’s

It really helped to think of Kell as similar to Howl in Howl’s Moving Castle. Especially flipping the coat to the colors and moved to other worlds. It really reminded me of how Howl switched the dial and would be transported to different parts of the world.

Finally,

Honestly, this works as a great standalone novel. Yes, it is apparently a series which I will be continuing to read but this book holds up on its own as well.

And yes, that is V. E. Schwab’s autograph on the cover!
