This is the fantasy detective novel you never knew you needed

This wonderful novel follows Bryce Quinlan– a half fae- half human who lives in Crescent City with her long time roommate Danika Fendyr (who also happens to be one of the most powerful wolves ever). When things turn upside for Bryce, she finds herself forced to find out who is responsible for the murder for someone she loves with the help of one of the most notorious killers in Crescent City- Hunt Athalar (An angel). Although the introduction is a little confusing, I assure you that this story is one of the best I’ve ever read.

Oh No’s

The info-dumping right at the beginning. A lot of people are having a hard time getting into this book as Sarah just decided to word vomit the entire world right at the beginning instead of slowly introducing anything. This is off putting to so many people but to you I say, just get to page 40. From there you will be hook-line-and sinker.

We never get an explanation of who exactly Bryce’s friend Fury is. The entire novel she is a mystery and we get an explanation of every person except her. She ends up showing up even at the end adding more mystery to her character and yet no explanation to who she may be. This hopefully is due to an eventual book two and I cannot wait for it.

Yay’s

The slow burn romance between Bryce and Hunt, oh my god. When the situation gets muddled and they are forced to live together I just felt my blood boil in anticipation. If you’re familiar with Sarah J. Maas’ romance writing, then you know this main couple was going to be good. I really hope we get to read more of them in the future with this series because these two work so well together gosh I just wanted them to get together the whole time so freaking bad.

The writing of this novel was beautiful. The layers upon layers of secrets and hidden truths just made for such appetizing reveals. After finishing this book, I ended up looking up fanart of every character cause I could not get enough of this story.

Finally,

This is one of my all time favorite books not only of the year but that I’ve read. This contends with Throne of Glass it is that good. I definitely recommend picking up this book, powering through the beginning, and taking the chance to open your eyes to the world of Midgard and to the town of Crescent City.

My similar recommendation for this novel would be Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

  1. I want to read this so bad. I ordered it to my place of work before lock down started and now cant get it!!

    I love Sarah J Maas books, and personally think ACOTAR was better than TOG but it also has a lot more info-dumps. Perhaps it’ll get more info-dump-like as we go?

    1. I feel like she just has so much in her head she just wants everyone to understand what this world is right out of the gates! It’s funny cause ACOTAR is my least liked book but the second one is my favorite 😂 I actually enjoyed ACOFAS too because of the simplicity of the novella

  6. OH YAY! This is fabulous, I started reading it last week and I struggled with the info-dumping so much, but I think I got to just around page 40 and when I get a chance I’m going to pick it up again. Sarah J. Maas is one of my all-fave authors so I have very high expectations for this!

  7. I love the way you set up your book reviews! It’s short and to the point, and I think that’s perfect! I always end up rambling when I review, so props to you! I see your point about the info dumping, it’s honestly one of the main reasons I haven’t read The Hobbit yet. I have a weird principle about never skipping pages in my book under any circumstances, and I’m not ready for that 30 page description of “rolling hills” yet! hahaha

    1. When I read the hobbit it honestly wasn’t that bad! Especially compared to Fellowship (which I DNFd bc of the infodumping)! And thank you so much! I could never figure out how to make my thoughts into coherent posts so I figured an old school book review breakdown would be perfect!

  9. I really want to read this book, I have loved all of Sarah J Maas’ books so far, but I’m put off by how big this book is. It’s a bit intimidating. But I’ve been told by so many people that it’s so good, I need to try to read it

  12. How good you loved this book! This is one of my best reads of the year. The friendship between Bryce and Danika was something unique and honestly so well written. You’re right, during the first 40 pages I was like “what the hell am i reading and why i can’t remember anything i read on the last page”, but as the book goes that’s easily solved. I can’t wait for the second book💖
